Each coach body kit contains:
Cast ends, punched sides, floor pan, sole bars and roof in aluminium, vents, buffers, vee
hangers, vacuum cylinder, dynamo, non-specific
battery boxes, partitioning, glazing, instructions,
scale plans, historical data plus other detailing
parts as applicable.
Please note that any coach from any
set can be purchased separately, as can any
component.
Production of Phoenix Kits is labour intensive and with some 350 types in our catalogue, the punched sides for a particular kit may not be available in stock. Replenishment of stock is best carried out on a batch production basis, so therefore please allow at least eight to twelve weeks for your kit to be delivered. In the event that we cannot meet this timescale, we will endeavour to advise you.

SR/BR 'Thanet' Corridor Coaches
(body kits only)
When the SR was formed very little corridor stock was inherited from the SECR, yet there was an urgent need for modern stock on the Eastern Section.
At 9'-0" the 'Ironclads' were too wide for some routes in North Kent so Maunsell and Lynes (see later) produced a design that was the same length but reduced in width to 8'-6" (Restriction 1).
Like the 'Ironclads' they had British Standard gangways and screw couplings (whereas the subsequent 'Maunsell standard' stock had Pullman gangways and buckeye couplers).
The 'Thanets' displayed certain SECR details, perhaps the more noticeable being the 'L' shaped commode handles.
For those requiring more information we would recommend "An Illustrated History of Southern Coaches" by our member Mike King (OPC 2003) and "Maunsell's SR Steam Carriage Stock" by David Gould
(Oakwood 2000) both of which have chapters on the 'Thanets'. Also recommended are the drawings
made by Mike King, to whom application including an SAE should be made, at:
16 Barricane, St Johns Hill Road, Woking, Surrey, GU21 1RB.
Only three tyoes of 'Thanets' were produced as listed below:
Code Description Built Diag Price
SC80 Third 1924-5 53 £26.00
SC81 5 Compartment Brake Third 1924-5 165 £26.00#
SC82 Composite 1924-5 317 £26.00#
# Under development, please enquire before ordering.
Please Note : These kits contain ends which are, strictly, of LMS pattern though they are the correct scale width, ie 8'-6". If you prefer to make your own ends we can supply these kits without ends at £22.00 each.
An unlucky group of coaches, out of seventy-seven 'Thanets' built, nine were lost in accidents or through enemy action in WW2. Early set formations were fluid, but by 1928 there were eight sets made up wholly of 'Thanets':
4-sets Nos 388 & 425, 6-set 423, 7-sets 424, 460, 461 & 463 and 8-set 462, plus many loose examples. The 6, 7 & 8-sets (except 463) had, in addition, a first, later composite, Pullman inserted to provide refreshments.
These eight sets survived until 1959 but the length and composition varied over the years, and non-'Thanets' appeared in some in the later years. Further details may be found in 'Appendices to the Carriage Working Notices' held in the SRG Library or in SRG Data Sheets.
Others were 'loose' and in 1946 some thirds were formed in two car sets 331-3 with SECR Wainwright birdcage corridor brake composites for Ashford-Hastings services.

Notes re-prototype use of Phoenix SR bogies
SR Standard 8' bogies (SAB1, SCB1, SXB1 & SRB1) are fitted to Maunsell
and Bulleid corridor stock, also the trailer bogies on most EMUs (but see below).
A few Ironclads and the 1935-6 Rebuilds of LSWR stock also had these bogies.
9' motor bogies (SAB2, SXB2, SCB2, SMB2) were fitted to the outer ends of
4COR/4RES/4BUF motor coaches, and two were fitted to each 6PUL/6CIT/6PAN & 5BEL motor coach.
The 9' LSWR Warner Double Framed ('Dreadnought') Bogie (SAB3, SXB3 and SCB3) was fitted to the early Ironclad coaches, 7/21 to 3/23.
The LSWR Warner single framed 9' bogie (SAB4, SXB4 and SCB4) was fitted to the majority of the Ironclads, 6/23 to 12/25.
The 8' 9" Motor Bogie (SAB5, SXB5, SCB5, SRB5, SMB5) was fitted to the outer ends of suburban and semi-fast motor coaches ie 2BIL, 2HAL, 4SUB, 4LAV, 2EPB, 4EPB, 2HAP.
The 8' 9" Trailer Collector Bogie (SAB6, SXB6, SCB6 and SRB6) was fitted to the outer ends of driving trailers of 2-car EMUs ie 2BIL, 2HAL, 2EPB, 2HAP.
Fox's Pressed Steel Bogies (SAB7, SXB7 and SCB7; SAB8, SXB8, SCB8) were used by many pre-grouping Companies.
The 8'-0" equalised beam bogies (SAB9, SXB9 and SCB9) were fitted to trailer coaches of 6PUL/CIT and 5BEL units. These were rebuilt with leaf springs from 1955-6. At present these modified bogies are not in our range - if anyone has a drawing or a clear photograph - please, please, please....!!
